Behind The Scenes – The Making of “You Don’t Realize How Perfect You Are To Me (Aphrodite)” Music Video

by Christopher Louie

Track Overview: A Musical Interpretation of Love

Serving as Track 2 on the eight-track EP, “You Don’t Realize How Perfect You Are To Me (Aphrodite)” presents a new musical interpretation of a poem centered on love, admiration, and emotional connection. The song explores an optimistic and heartfelt romantic theme, capturing the profound appreciation one person feels for a partner they regard as truly perfect.

At its core, the narrative reflects on a chance meeting that ultimately becomes life-changing. The speaker looks back on this serendipitous encounter and recalls the lasting impression left by the beloved from the very beginning. As the story unfolds, the lyrics celebrate the partner’s many qualities, including their beauty, kindness, compassion, and understanding nature. These characteristics are portrayed as a source of comfort and stability, bringing a sense of peace, happiness, and emotional balance into the speaker’s life.

Throughout the song, feelings of deep affection and fulfillment remain at the forefront. The relationship is depicted as one built on genuine emotional connection, trust, and mutual understanding. The speaker expresses a desire for a lasting and successful partnership, while also conveying gratitude for having found someone who feels uniquely special. By the song’s conclusion, the beloved is presented as a rare and precious gift—someone who inspires unwavering devotion, admiration, and love. In this way, the piece captures the enduring appeal of soulmate-inspired romance and the belief that certain relationships can feel destined and transformative.

A Fusion of Emotion and Sound: The Musical Identity of “Aphrodite”

Musically, “Aphrodite” is reimagined as a passionate love ballad that combines emotional storytelling with subtle electronic dance influences. This blend creates a distinctive atmosphere that feels both melancholic and uplifting, balancing moments of longing and reflection with a sense of hope and joy. While preserving the romantic heart of the original poem, the song expands its emotional scope through rich musical production with immersive sound.

The arrangement incorporates atmospheric textures, cinematic instrumentation, and layered musical elements that enhance the song’s emotional impact. These production choices help create a larger, more enveloping listening experience, allowing the themes of love and devotion to resonate more deeply.

The result is a compelling fusion of musical styles, bringing together the emotional sincerity of a 1990s love ballad, the accessibility of modern pop, and the energy of contemporary electronic influences. By combining these elements with timeless themes of romance and affection, “Aphrodite” presents a modern reinterpretation of a classic love story, while preserving its emotional depth through catchy beats and a compelling rhythmic melody.

The official music video for “Aphrodite” extends the song’s themes beyond music, transforming it into a visually rich experience that combines romance, nostalgia, beauty, mythology, and cinematic storytelling. Through dreamlike imagery and sweeping visuals, the video complements the poem’s emotional message, creating a celebration of admiration, devotion, and love. Rather than simply illustrating the lyrics, the production presents a narrative inspired by one of the most enduring stories from classical mythology: the birth of the goddess Aphrodite.

Building a Romance Around Aphrodite‘s Origin Story

You Don’t Realize How Perfect You Are To Me (Aphrodite)” draws heavily from ancient Greek mythology, and the music video opens by depicting the goddess’s legendary origins. The sequence is inspired by the famous Renaissance masterpiece The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, which portrays the Roman goddess Venus emerging from the sea. In Roman mythology, Venus is the equivalent of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, much as Diana corresponds to Artemis and Minerva corresponds to Athena.

To establish this mythological foundation, the video references the ancient creation story surrounding Aphrodite’s birth. According to the legend, Gaia, the personification of Earth, grew resentful of her son, who she took as her husband, Uranus (the personification of the Sky). Uranus feared that his children might one day overthrow his rule, and so he imprisoned them deep within Gaia’s womb—or, figuratively, within the depths of the Earth itself. This resulted in Gaia’s pain and suffering and drove her to seek revenge. She fashioned a sickle from adamantine, an exceptionally powerful mythical material, and called upon her children to act against their father.

Among all of her offspring, only the youngest Titan, Cronus, possessed both the courage and ambition to carry out the task. The music video adapts this story through a more accessible visual interpretation. Cronus, traditionally portrayed as a bearded figure, is shown entering a grand gathering in the heavens in search of Uranus. Here I chose for Uranus to appear as an elderly, white-haired ruler seated upon a heavenly throne, emphasizing his status as king of the skies.

While the original myth contains graphic elements, the video presents a modified version of the story suitable for a general audience. In classical mythology, Cronus ambushed Uranus during a private intimate moment with Gaia and used the sickle to castrate him while he was naked. The music video instead portrays a direct attack upon Uranus while he sits upon his throne during the celestial gathering. This adaptation preserves the central event of the myth while avoiding imagery that would be inappropriate for a wider audience.

Following Uranus’s defeat, the story continues with one of the most famous moments in Greek mythology. According to the legend, the severed remains of Uranus were cast into the sea, causing foam to form upon the ocean’s surface. The Greek word aphros, meaning “foam,” is the origin of Aphrodite’s name. From this sea foam emerged Aphrodite herself, fully grown and already possessing the extraordinary beauty for which she would become renowned. The goddess is said to have eventually arrived on the shores of Cyprus within a giant clamshell—an image immortalized in countless artistic interpretations throughout history, most famously in Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus.

The video recreates this iconic moment as the beginning of its central narrative. A mortal man, serving as the story’s protagonist, is shown quietly relaxing on a beach when he witnesses the miraculous arrival of the goddess. As the shell opens, Aphrodite rises from a fetal position and reveals herself in her full divine form. She is presented as radiant, graceful, and breathtakingly beautiful, embodying the qualities traditionally associated with the goddess of love and beauty.

Unaware of the profound effect she has on those around her, Aphrodite walks ashore without acknowledging the people or world surrounding her. Yet the protagonist is immediately captivated by what he has witnessed. Unable to look away, he begins following her. This simple but powerful act becomes the driving force of the entire narrative, with the protagonist continuing to follow Aphrodite throughout the video’s journey.

The Courtship of a Goddess

The concept mirrors themes explored in the earlier “Gaia” and “Artemis” narrative as depicted in their respective music videos, drawing upon the idea of a mortal encountering a divine being. The story suggests that when faced with something so extraordinary, beautiful, and seemingly beyond human understanding, fascination becomes almost unavoidable. The protagonist simply follows her, motivated by awe, admiration, and enchantment. In doing so, the video reinforces the song’s broader themes of devotion, idealized love, and the powerful emotional impact of encountering someone perceived as truly extraordinary…and perfect.

As Aphrodite is traditionally known as the goddess of love, I naturally wanted a romantic story that serves as the foundation of the music video’s narrative. Building upon the goddess’s mythological origins established in the opening scenes, the video gradually evolves into a tale of admiration, courtship, and enduring love between a mortal man and a divine being.

The story begins at the moment the male protagonist first sees Aphrodite emerge from the sea. Instantly captivated by her beauty and presence, he becomes increasingly drawn to her as the narrative unfolds. What follows is a classic courtship journey that mirrors the romantic themes expressed throughout the song and its accompanying poem. The protagonist attempts to win her affection through sincere gestures, including presenting her with a bouquet of red roses. As the relationship develops, Aphrodite eventually accepts his affection, marking a significant turning point in the story.

From there, the video depicts the couple spending time together in a variety of romantic settings. They are shown sharing dinner dates and strolling side by side through the picturesque streets of a Mediterranean seaside town. These scenes provide a visual representation of the growing bond between the two characters while reinforcing the song’s themes of companionship, admiration, and emotional fulfillment. The warm coastal atmosphere, charming architecture, and relaxed pace of these sequences help create an idealized vision of romance that complements the song’s heartfelt message.

The visual narrative closely follows the progression of the poem that inspired the song. As a result, several key scenes are included to illustrate Aphrodite’s personality beyond her physical beauty. Throughout the video, she is shown interacting with various strangers and random people in the streets, demonstrating generosity, kindness, and compassion. These moments play an important role in developing her character and provide insight into why she is viewed so highly by the speaker of the poem. Rather than presenting her solely as a symbol of beauty, the video emphasizes the qualities that make her admirable on a deeper level, including her warmth, empathy, and positive influence on those around her.

As the story approaches its conclusion, the narrative expands beyond the mortal world and returns to its mythological roots. Rather than ending the romance when Aphrodite must return to her divine home, the video imagines a continuation of their relationship. In a dramatic fantasy sequence, Aphrodite takes the protagonist with her as she ascends to Mount Olympus, the legendary home of the Greek gods. Holding onto him as they soar into the heavens, she brings him into a realm normally inaccessible to mortals.

The Apotheosis of Aphrodite

Upon arriving on Mount Olympus, the protagonist encounters many of the central figures of Greek mythology. Among those present are the king of the gods, Zeus, along with other major Olympian deities including Hera, Athena, Artemis, Poseidon, Ares, Hermes, Apollo, and additional gods, goddesses, and divine beings. The setting serves as the backdrop for one of the video’s most important moments: Aphrodite’s deification and ceremonial recognition as an Olympian goddess.

In this sequence, Zeus formally crowns Aphrodite, placing a crown upon her head in a symbolic act of honor and acceptance. The scene functions as both a celebration of her divine status and a culmination of the mythological journey that began with her birth from the sea. Following the ceremony, the atmosphere becomes festive as the Olympian gods, goddesses, and nymphs gather to celebrate. Flowers and rose petals are thrown into the air as Aphrodite and her companion walk together through the crowd, creating a triumphant and joyful conclusion to this extended fictional retelling of her mythological story.

The final moments of the video suggest a fairy-tale ending. I wanted to give them their happily ever after and so Aphrodite and the protagonist are shown embracing within their home on Mount Olympus, implying that their love story continues beyond the events depicted on screen. As the camera slowly pulls away from the divine mountain, clouds gradually envelop the scene, bringing the narrative to a gentle and visually symbolic close. The ending reinforces the themes of eternal love, devotion, and romantic fulfillment that run throughout both the poem and the song.
