The Heart Behind The Scenes: The Making of “A Love Proposition 2: Beauty’s Response” Music Video

by Christopher Louie

“A Love Proposition 2: Beauty’s Response” forms the concluding half of a diptych poem crafted as an intimate exchange of love letters between a pair of high society aristocrats. The first poem presents the man’s perspective: a heartfelt appeal addressed to the woman he admires, in which he attempts to win her affection by beginning with praise—specifically, by honoring her beauty in hopes that such admiration might open the doorway to deeper love.

“Beauty’s Response” came into being after a request from my friends in a poetry workshop where we regularly share and discuss our work. When I first presented “A Love Proposition,” it was met with warm praise and genuine enthusiasm. Several attendees expressed a desire to see the story continue—specifically, they wanted a sequel that would resolve the emotional tension of the first poem and, more importantly, give voice to Beauty herself. They were curious about how she would react after receiving such an earnest declaration of love from her admirer.

Their interest planted the seed for what ultimately became the second half of this diptych poem. I realized that if Beauty were to speak, she needed a compelling narrative of her own—one that would explain why she so consistently turned away the affections of the many suitors who sought her heart. Her reputation for rejecting proposals was something of a defining trait, and it called for a deeper, more human justification.

I realized that the most believable explanation for her repeated refusals would be to portray Beauty as someone bearing emotional scars from a past heartbreak. That insight gave me the perfect foundation for constructing Beauty’s voice and her story. With that insight, I began shaping the second poem—an intimate, vulnerable response that completes the diptych and reveals the hidden pain behind her guarded nature.

The second piece functions as her written reply, a thoughtful and emotionally layered response to his earnest declaration. In it, she explains that although his words deeply touch her, her heart is not one she can offer freely or casually. She expresses that her reluctance to surrender to love is not rooted in disinterest but in the lingering wounds of a past betrayal. While she reassures him that he stands apart from all other suitors—emphasizing that none can rival his sincerity—she also reveals the reason for her guardedness: a former lover, a “seducer,” once shattered her trust, leaving her fragile, cautious, and afraid of being vulnerable again.

She directly rejects the rumors that portray her as merely a “tease,” clarifying that such assumptions misinterpret her self-protective distance. Her hesitation is not a game, nor a manipulation, but the natural result of a heart that has been forced to heal from profound hurt. The poem thus transforms the dynamic established in the first piece: where the man’s letter carried the hopeful pressure of a romantic plea, her response reframes the exchange as a story of personal restoration and emotional survival. We should also keep the cultural context in mind, as perspectives on this may vary widely: it is decidedly uncharacteristic for a Victorian-era gentleman to risk calling a woman of reputable background a “tease,” as such a term could easily be perceived as deeply offensive or insulting. Yet, as noted in the behind-the-scenes commentary for the first video, their ability to speak so frankly—using language that might otherwise be deemed inappropriate or too bold—suggests that the two have known one another long enough, or at least been aware of each other’s presence long enough, to converse with this kind of openness and trust.

Through this revelation, the poem shifts the narrative established by the man’s initial plea. Where his letter carried the hopeful pressure of romantic persuasion, her response reframes the exchange as a story of emotional recovery and personal healing. Despite her fragility, she does not close herself off. Instead, she sets a clear and heartfelt boundary: she is prepared—perhaps even yearning—to move beyond her “healing voyage” and accept his love. But she can do so only if he offers the unwavering assurance, the emotional safety, and the steadfast devotion that her previous lover destroyed. Only with such certainty can she truly allow her heart to be entrusted again.

For the music video, I designed the opening sequence with the intention of creating an elegant and atmospheric introduction—one that immediately immerses the viewer in the world of Victorian-era London. The first scene presents a sweeping top-down view of the city, settling onto a horse-drawn carriage making its way through an affluent London neighborhood. To infuse the landscape with a gentle romantic undertone, I incorporated cherry blossoms into the scenery. Their pink pastel hues subtly signal to the audience that, at its heart, this entire narrative is a love story.

From there, the scene transitions smoothly to the female protagonist—whom I simply call Beauty—gliding past the male protagonist in her carriage. She remains unaware of his presence as she passes by, while he, as always, cannot help but watch her. Every time she enters his field of vision, he becomes utterly captivated. He simply cannot get enough of her, and this moment sets the emotional tone for their dynamic.

Before the song transitions into its first vocal phrase, I wanted to use these early visual beats to paint a clearer picture of how Beauty spends her days. One of the next scenes shows her strolling calmly through her garden, a serene space overflowing with lush flowers and featuring a gentle water fountain in the background. This imagery is meant to emphasize her preference for a peaceful, harmonious life—one defined by beauty, stillness, and quiet reflection.

Because this song represents her response to her admirer, I also included an early scene of her sitting at her writing desk in her bedroom, composing a letter with a feathered pen. In this moment, she is crafting her reply to the heartfelt message he sent her. Once the vocals begin, I return to the setting used in the previous video, reintroducing the sequence of her receiving and reading the letter from her admirer. Although the aesthetic echoes the earlier piece, these shots are entirely new and tailored specifically to this sequel. Their purpose is to capture the flurry of excitement she feels the instant she recognizes the sender—him. To make this emotional spark unmistakable, I designed the shots to show her hugging the letter to her chest, her face lighting up with pure delight.

A pair of additional scenes were created to visually present the contents of the letter itself. The first close-up reveals the opening stanza from the first poem, followed by another scene that displays the final lines of that same piece. These flashes of written text bridge the two videos and underscore the connection between the original poem and her heartfelt reply.

It is worth noting that many of the scenes throughout the video feature Beauty seated at her writing desk. This repetition is intentional, as the central focus of the second poem—and therefore the video—is her act of composing a response to her admirer’s heartfelt letter. The visual emphasis on her writing reinforces that the narrative has shifted to her perspective, her emotions, and her willingness to confront the feelings she has long kept guarded.

Among these scenes is a moment showing her standing by her bedroom window while the male protagonist approaches from outside, holding a book in his hand. My intention behind this imagery to show his attempt to subtly communicate his desire to speak with her face-to-face. The book he carries is not merely a prop; it holds the letters that he’s already crafted and ready to deliver into her hands. Should circumstances prevent him from engaging in a full conversation, the book serves a dual purpose—within it, he can quickly tuck away the letter, prepare to withdraw it at a moment’s notice and offer it to her as a clear expression of his intentions.

However, in this particular scene, Beauty looks downward instead of meeting his gaze. Her lowered eyes convey an unspoken message—one that might easily be interpreted as disinterest or emotional distance. This silent gesture is not meant to dismiss him outright but rather reveals the tension within her: the conflict between her genuine feelings and the fear holding her back. All of this hesitation, all of this quiet inner turmoil, is purposeful and will unravel gradually as the video continues, allowing viewers to understand the deeper reasons behind her guarded behavior.

Because she is an aristocrat within London’s high society, I made sure to weave in several scenes that reflect her elevated social standing. These include moments of her visiting grand palaces and magnificent architectural landmarks, as well as quieter interludes of her roaming through the opulence of her own home. Whether she is gazing thoughtfully out a window or seeking solitude in her lush gardens, these visuals help situate her firmly within the refined, privileged world she inhabits. It also felt essential to show her alone in her elegantly furnished living room, sipping wine—a subtle yet unmistakable reminder that she is a woman of status, elegance, and cultivated taste.

For the most pivotal moment in the entire video—the revelation of her troubled past—I chose to portray her with her long hair down, standing in what appears to be an intimate embrace with a man from an earlier chapter of her life. His identity, however, is intentionally obscured; his face is seldom shown, and he is often turned away from the camera. This choice was deliberate, as the focus is not on who he was but on what he represented to her. In these scenes, it was crucial that her expression clearly communicate that she was deeply in love at the time, completely swept up in the emotions of a first, wholehearted affection.

However, the tone shifts sharply the moment the music begins to reveal the heartbreaking truth. I created a scene in which she collapses to her knees, tears brimming in her eyes, as the man walks away from her without hesitation or remorse. This visual captures the devastating moment she is abandoned—discarded by someone she believed to be extraordinary, someone who had seduced her and then left her shattered. These scenes are vital for understanding the emotional trauma that underscores the second half of this diptych poem. They explain why she remained single for so long, why she guarded her heart so fiercely, and why opening herself to love again has felt nearly impossible.

After this poignant heartbreak sequence, the video transitions back to her seated at her writing desk. Yet I made sure that the very first frame shows her looking up, as though momentarily lost in thought or still haunted by the painful memories that have shaped her. Only after this brief, telling pause does she lower her gaze and resume writing her response—her letters tinged with a coldness born not of indifference but of long-standing emotional scars.

One detail worth noting is the shift in her wardrobe across the two videos. In this installment, she is no longer shown wearing the emerald-green dress or the plain yellow dress she wore at home in the first video. Those garments were intentionally tied to earlier contexts—her appearances at social gatherings and the quiet, everyday moments when she welcomed visitors into her home. For this second video, however, I chose to focus exclusively on her demure bustle-style yellow dress. This particular gown captures her at her most radiant and graceful, yet it is also the attire she wears during her saddest, most emotionally vulnerable moments. The contrast between her beauty and her sorrow perfectly mirrors the emotional essence of the second poem and the story told through the music video.

For the ending, I wanted to give her a sense of joy and resolution. She has endured so much heartache, and her heart has remained closed for far too long. It felt important—necessary, even—that she finally be granted the happiness she deserves. The male protagonist is a man of depth, sincerity, and devotion, someone capable of offering precisely the kind of reassurance she craves. He is the one who can love her faithfully and loyally for the rest of their lives. This is the happy ending I wish not only for these characters but for everyone who is searching for love or who is already sharing life with someone special.
