A Look at the Making of “You Don’t Realize How Perfect You Are To Me (Artemis)” Music Video

by Christopher Louie

Artemis” serves as the fourth principal track on the “You Don’t Realize How Perfect You Are To Me” EP, and from the moment it begins, it arrives with a surge of kinetic energy. At its core, the song is undeniably dance-driven—steady, pulsing, and vibrant—designed to keep momentum flowing from beginning to end. Yet midway through the track, the music takes an unexpected turn, opening into a brief instrumental passage infused with a distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere.

With this section, I wanted the sonic landscape to feel both sun-warmed and ancient while remaining unmistakably contemporary. An exotic solo instrumental emerges against nostalgic synth-wave dance rhythms, creating a bridge between old-world influences and modern electronic production. Hand-played percussion is replaced with digitally generated rhythms and soundscapes. The result is a musical experience that feels timeless and modern simultaneously.

To me, “Artemis” represents motion itself—graceful, instinctive, and unbound. That spirit became the foundation for the official music video and informed every creative decision that followed.

Translating the song into visual form offered an opportunity to construct a world defined by contrasts: shadow and light, stillness and movement, softness and strength. Rather than relying on a literal narrative, the video embraces a dreamlike aesthetic built on symbolism and atmosphere. The imagery is intended to embody a feeling rather than tell a straightforward story—a sense of freedom moving through darkness, a silent summons toward something wild, radiant, and beyond reach.

The song itself is based on my poem of the same name, which explores an optimistic vision of love. The poem centers on the profound admiration one person feels for a partner they perceive as perfect. The speaker reflects upon a chance meeting that leaves a lasting impression and forever alters the course of their emotional life. Throughout the verses, the beloved is portrayed as beautiful, kind, and deeply understanding—someone whose presence brings peace, joy, and emotional fulfillment.

As the poem progresses, the speaker expresses affection, gratitude, and devotion while imagining a strong and successful future together. Ultimately, the poem captures the essence of soulmate love, presenting the beloved as a rare and precious gift whose presence inspires enduring affection and commitment.

When developing the music video, I wanted its central premise to revolve around Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, wilderness, moon, and chastity. Because Artemis is among the virgin goddesses of the Greek divine realm, constructing an entire love story around her presented a unique challenge. However, Greek mythology offers a compelling foundation through the story of Orion, the mortal hunter who shared her passion for hunting and is said to have won her affection.

Of course, Artemis’s reputation as the goddess of chastity had to remain intact within traditional mythology, and according to legend, her relationship with Orion ultimately ended in tragedy. Her twin brother Apollo, determined to prevent their union, tricked Artemis into killing Orion, ensuring that marriage would never take place.

For this music video, however, I chose not to follow that tragic path. Instead, I wanted to create an alternative interpretation that remained faithful to the emotional progression of the poem and lyrics. The narrative imagines Artemis descending to Earth in human guise for a brief period of time, where she encounters a mortal man who views her as perfect in every conceivable way. Because the poem and song are told entirely from his perspective, the video was designed to showcase how he spends his time with her during this extraordinary encounter.

Artemis is also known for her fiercely competitive nature, and this characteristic played an important role in shaping the video. It is often said that one of the reasons she was drawn to Orion was because he was a worthy rival in hunting and athletic pursuits. To acknowledge that aspect of her mythology, several scenes depict Artemis and the male character running side by side or racing one another. These moments symbolize how shared challenges and friendly competition strengthen their bond and deepen their affection.

The video also includes a number of sequences featuring Artemis dancing ritualistically among a group of nymphs. In Greek mythology, these nymphs are her devoted companions, attendants, and hunting partners. As followers of the goddess, they participate in ceremonial dances performed beneath the moon, honoring Artemis in her role as the goddess of the moon.

During the song’s bridge—the section infused with Mediterranean flair—the distinctive rhythms and exotic dance beats called for a unique visual treatment. This became the ideal moment to showcase Artemis performing ritualistic dances, including scenes in which she belly dances at the center of a circle formed by her nymph companions. These sequences were chosen specifically because the hip movements and flowing choreography harmonize naturally with the Mediterranean-inspired beats and instrumentation.

I also incorporated daytime dance sequences after noticing that some of the nighttime scenes beneath a full moon did not appear as realistic as intended. The daylight footage ultimately complemented the bridge beautifully, allowing the dance movements and rhythmic energy to shine while reinforcing the Mediterranean atmosphere created by the music.

The setting itself carries significant historical and mythological importance. The video opens with imagery inspired by the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus in present-day Turkey, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Although the temple once stood as a magnificent monument of marble and architectural grandeur, today only a handful of columns remain as reminders of its former glory.

Historically, the temple was destroyed in 356 BCE by a man named Herostratus, who deliberately set it ablaze in an attempt to immortalize himself through notoriety. Throughout the video, the ruins of the temple appear in the background of multiple scenes, serving as both a visual anchor and a symbolic connection to Artemis’s enduring legacy.

Costume design also played an important role in shaping the visual identity of the characters. Artemis is dressed in white throughout the video, a color chosen to symbolize purity and her connection to the moon. The male protagonist wears a white henley shirt paired with black skinny jeans, occasionally complemented by a dark denim jacket to show him as your average contemporary young man.

Throughout much of the narrative, I wanted the male character to be shown following behind Artemis. This visual motif represents his pursuit of her—not only merely in a romantic sense, but also as an expression of admiration, devotion, and the desire to remain close to someone he perceives as extraordinary.

Despite the inherent complications of creating a romantic storyline involving a virgin goddess, I ultimately wanted the narrative to conclude on a hopeful note. While a happy ending may seem unlikely given her reputation of purity and chastity within the traditional framework of Greek mythology, the freedom of creative interpretation made it possible to imagine a different outcome.

In the final scene, Artemis and the mortal protagonist are shown ascending toward Mount Olympus with wings. Within Greek mythology, gods are understood to possess the ability to grant wings to mortals when it serves a divine purpose or assists them in their journeys. As a result, this ending felt like a fitting conclusion—one that remains rooted in mythological possibility while allowing the story to embrace a more uplifting resolution.

Thank you for joining me for this behind-the-scenes exploration of the “Artemis” music video. I hope this deeper look into the song, its mythology, and its visual storytelling has offered greater insight into the creative vision behind the project.
