A Victorian Diptych | A Behind The Scenes Look at “A Love Proposition” Music Video

A Love Proposition: A Two-Part Visual and Poetic Journey

“A Love Proposition” is a creative project designed as a two-part poetic exchange, structured as intimate love letters passing between two people. The first half of this series features a man reaching out to the woman he admires, hoping to win her over by celebrating her extraordinary beauty. This specific poem follows the classic tradition of a “procreation plea,” using high-flown compliments mixed with a sense of urgency about the passage of time. This poem was inspired by Shakespeare’s Sonnet 1, ‘From Fairest Creatures We Desire Increase,’ drawing particularly from its themes of beauty, legacy, and human mortality.

The speaker argues that it is almost a crime for someone so beautiful to stay single, suggesting that while her beauty currently ages like a fine wine, it will eventually fade unless she passes it on to the next generation. He insists that because she possesses such a rare splendor, it would be cruel of her if she didn’t share her beauty with future generations. By framing her independence as the tragic waste of a rare and fleeting gift, the speaker concludes his letter with a strategic proposal. He offers his own heart as a sanctuary against the threat of future loneliness, accompanying this gesture with a bold request for her to surrender her solitude and build a family alongside him.

Historical Context and Creative Defiance

The visual companion to this poem is set in the atmospheric streets of Victorian-era London. While some might argue that people of that time were far too reserved for such a direct exchange—noting that a Victorian man would rarely criticize a woman’s independence and a woman would rarely respond so openly—the project suggests that true love is powerful enough to break social rules. The poem insinuates in its own way that these two characters are perhaps secretly in love already, and this deep, hidden bond is exactly what gives them the courage to speak their minds so openly and act outside the strict expectations and rigid norms of 19th-century society.

Visual Storytelling Through Fashion

The female protagonist was designed to be a true beauty of her time, someone that would be difficult to take your eyes off of. To tell the story of the female protagonist, three distinct outfits were chosen to reflect different sides of her life. When she is at home in her private routine, she wears a simple yellow dress, which is what she is wearing when she first receives and reads the life-changing letter. For public scenes, such as parties or walks in the garden, she appears in a striking emerald green dress. This strapless design is meant to be alluring and captivating, showing a bolder, less conservative side of her personality. Finally, for traveling through town, she wears a yellow bustle dress that is almost entirely covered up, providing a look of demure sophistication.

In contrast, the male protagonist wears a standard black suit of the era. He was intentionally styled to look like an ordinary gentleman to make it believable that she would hesitate to accept his offer—or at least that is what the video wants the viewers to think. At the same time, he was designed to still come across as attractive enough to stand above other men.

It is important to recognize that in this era, his ability to stand out from the crowd is not necessarily a matter of physical appearance. Instead, what truly resonates in her eyes are his gentlemanly qualities—the various hoops, hurdles, and exhaustive efforts he is willing to go through just to earn a moment of her attention. His defining trait is an unwavering persistence that she cannot help but notice. The intention behind this characterization was to demonstrate that such steadfast devotion is a far more attractive and distinguishing quality than mere looks alone.

One particularly telling scene involves the male protagonist handing a letter to his butler, charging him with the mission of delivering the message to the object of his affection. When the letter finally arrives, the woman’s initial reaction is one of practiced calm, bordering on boredom. This expression was intended to suggest that receiving correspondence from hopeful suitors is a routine, perhaps even tedious, part of her daily life. However, a dramatic shift occurs the moment she begins to read and realizes the letter is actually from him. Her expression immediately transforms, lighting up with a genuine excitement that stands in stark contrast to her previous indifference. This reveal was intentionally delayed until the final moments of the video to maintain a sense of mystery. By showing her as seemingly unaffected for most of the narrative, the depth of her true feelings is made much more impactful when it is finally uncovered.

The Power of Persistence and Presence

A major theme in the visual direction is the man’s unwavering persistence. In nearly every scene, he is shown watching her with a look of deep affection. The goal was to show him as someone who is completely smitten rather than someone intrusive; he ensures she is always aware of his presence and knows he has no intention of giving up on her. Rather than being portrayed as a stalking fiend who lurks in the shadows to catch a glimpse of her, he is depicted as a man of open and honest devotion. His presence is never hidden; instead, he ensures that his admiration is visible and respectful, choosing to be a constant, steady figure in her life rather than one who hides his intentions.

On the surface, the woman acts aloof and pretends not to notice him, but her internal thoughts are dominated by him. This tension is shown through subtle eye contact and moments where she purposefully looks away even when he is standing right in front of her, almost as if reminding herself to stay cautious—a hesitation that is explained further in the sequel, “Beauty’s Response.”

Symbolism and Social Status

The production uses movement to highlight the personality traits of both characters. Since the woman is a wealthy aristocrat, she is almost always shown traveling in a horse-drawn carriage. To balance this, the male protagonist—who is also wealthy—is frequently shown walking. This choice was made to show a humble side to his character, as if he is humbling himself whenever he is in her presence.

By framing the video with scenes of her entering and later leaving the carriage, the narrative comes full circle, reinforcing the emotional cycle at the heart of the story. The carriage becomes a symbolic space that reflects her inner hesitation, uncertainty, and vulnerability. Ending where the story began suggests that, although much has changed emotionally, she is still caught between fear and desire, unable to fully escape her conflicted feelings. At the same time, this circular structure marks the beginning of their complicated romantic journey — a relationship defined not by clarity or resolution, but by tension, longing, and emotional ambiguity.

For those who recognize a familiar face, the male protagonist also appeared in the video for “I Am Far From Perfect But I’ll Be Perfect For You.” Similarly, the female lead has been featured in several recent projects, including “All That Glitters Isn’t Gold,” “I Miss You,” and “If You Love Something, Set It Free (Reimagined).”

Hopefully, this visual and emotional journey offered a meaningful look into the hidden depths of Victorian romance.
