The First Date
Dusk stretched across the orange sky,
hung soft above the car window pane.
I glanced at my watch to check the time,
Counting down the hours that remained.
In the distance rose the highrise,
while traffic crawled beneath the rain.
I sent a text to keep you apprised,
Explaining why I was detained.
“Don’t worry, drive safely” you chimed.
My excitement could not be contained.
Finally, we met for the first time;
Praying our effort wouldn’t be in vain.
I looked around when I arrived;
A thousand thoughts ran through my brain.
Fears of being deceived filled my mind;
“Don’t be silly!” my voice exclaimed.
I wondered what meeting you’d be like,
whether you’d be pleasant or insane;
And what to do if things went awry,
or if you showed a look of disdain?
Then I looked up, and to my surprise,
All faith in the Divine was regained.
A vision of beauty filled my eyes;
I gasped as blood from my face drained.
You looked familiar, my heart surmised,
perhaps from a past life, it so claimed.
Your gaze would be my sweet demise;
A fated lure I couldn’t explain.
Talking with you, the hours took flight;
Our interests and dreams were the same.
Being with you felt so pure, so right;
That night I found my soul’s twin flame.
