You Were But A Fleeting Dream

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE

This poem is a heartfelt love letter from a speaker seeking reconciliation with a former lover after an abrupt end to their relationship. The ephemeral nature of their connection is compared to a fleeting dream, leaving the speaker with grief and confusion over the abrupt breakup. Despite the heartbreak, the speaker expresses a desire to understand the reasons behind the separation and hopes for a potential rekindling of their romance. The lingering feelings for the lover are undeniable, and the speaker yearns for communication to clarify misunderstandings and possibly reignite the passionate connection they once shared.

You Were But A Fleeting Dream

A fleeting dream, which you seemed to be,
left just as quickly as you came.
A whirlwind of romance you were to me;
A burning love with intense flame.

But now all that’s left is ash and debris;
Grief-stricken and torn is what I became.
A broken heart that I didn’t foresee
is the price I pay to entertain this game.

Never understood why you flee?
Giving up on us is such a shame.
You chose to be single, but aren’t you lonely?
I thought you loved me, or so you claimed.

This love isn’t over and I know you agree,
‘cause how I feel for you, you feel the same.
Hard to forget a love once thought to be
a blessing that I vow to one day reclaim.

If you have any hardship or difficulty,
or if I did something where I was to blame,
I wish that you would just talk to me;
Not knowing what went wrong drives me insane.

I’m not giving up on you that easily
In my dreams I still hear whispers of your name.
As fleeting as this dream may be,
but what’s real are my feelings that still remain.

You were but a fleeting dream to me,
a dream that will return from whence it came;
And if a reconciliation is a possibility,
won’t you reach out to reignite our flame?
