PROLOGUE
This poem expresses the theme that love is governed by the heart, which selectively chooses who it will cherish. The narrator reflects on lost love, mourning the absence of a significant other whose departure left a profound impact. Despite the passage of time, the heart clings to cherished memories, symbolized by preserved roses and heartfelt poems that highlight the enduring nature of true love. The narrator emphasizes that their love remains steadfast, locked away in the heart’s chamber, with no room for others. Ultimately, the heart remains devoted, yearning for the one it cannot forget, illustrating love’s resilience against time and adversity.
The Heart Wants What It Wants
Looking out through the window
at the clear azure sky,
Since that day you decided to go,
hundreds of days already passed by.
“Where are you?” my heart laments;
It’s a question I’d often wonder;
Why you left I can’t understand,
a bewilderment that makes me ponder.
The red roses that I gave you
those many years ago,
had been pressed and flattened too
after they withered and shriveled.
They now bookmark the pages
of a book containing my poems,
where I wrote about our exchanges
and my feelings for you alone.
Those words will let you see
the depth of my love for you,
that it’s deeper than the sea,
and without limits too.
If love is tested for its resilience
over the span of eternity,
then mine will triumph through diligence
as it will weather all adversity.
True love will always withstand
the tests and trials of time;
So will words written by hand
sincerely from this heart of mine.
Those solemn words from my poetry
are my legacy to you.
They are reflections solely
of the love between us two.
I hope they will prove to you
that you did not love me in vain,
and that night when you said “I love you”
those three words still remain.
Memories of you are secured away
in the chamber of my heart.
No space left for another soul to stay;
The chamber door is locked.
Over the years I’d try to push them out
to make room for someone new;
But with others the heart has doubts;
Its door is locked to keep just you.
The heart remains nonchalant
with everyone else I get to know;
The heart wants what it wants,
and it’s you that it won’t let go.
