Let Me Not Be The One You Spurn

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE

This poem addresses the intense fear of rejection faced when approaching a love interest. It captures the internal struggle of wanting to connect while grappling with self-doubt and anxiety about the possibility of being spurned. The speaker is captivated by someone across the room and yearns for a deeper connection but hesitates due to fears of inadequacy and the potential for missed opportunities. Throughout the poem, the theme of overthinking and the desire to make a meaningful introduction are explored, highlighting the tension between longing and fear in romantic pursuits.

Let Me Not Be The One You Spurn

Let me not be the one you spurn,
I had seen your eyes across the room.
They followed me wherever I turned;
I’d glance to the side and there you loomed.

The sight of you would have me yearned
for this connection to one day bloom
But first your name, I’d like to learn
and make your acquaintance this afternoon.

I’ve mustered courage to make me known
There’s mutual attraction, I presumed.
But even though we are both alone;
I’d still find it hard for us to commune.

I fear that if my intention is shown
at a time not yet opportune
that my chances will be blown
and my future with you will be doomed.

Will you like me, was my concern.
You are out of my league, I’d assume.
I need to be sure that I won’t be spurned,
for this game plan to resume.

Maybe I’ll wait till next time I return;
Doubts and anxiety, my mind consumed.
But let me not be the one you spurn
if I were to make your acquaintance soon.
