I Know Your Words

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE

In this poem, the speaker grapples with the conflict between their career and romantic relationship. They prioritize work, understanding that success depends on good reviews, but feel supported by their lover’s anonymous, glowing critique. The speaker recognizes their partner’s voice in the words, indicating deep emotional connection. They express mutual feelings but acknowledge the need for both to focus on personal aspirations. Ultimately, the speaker wishes for their lover’s happiness despite the physical distance, reaffirming that when the time is right, they hope to pursue a steady relationship together. This highlights the complexities of balancing love and ambition.

I Know Your Words

I just want to let you know,
that I never let you go;
That’s something that I can’t do.
The love you feel for me,
I know them well, you see…
I have the same feelings too.

I never ignore,
any of your texts before;
I want to take my time to reply.
I value each word you say;
Those words highlight my day;
Your love for me makes me cry.

I’ve seen your review
for my show’s debut,
published without author citing.
The prose you used,
I know it’s you!
I know your words and writing!

Thanks for the praising;
The review was amazing.
I know it was written from your heart.
You have no idea
how much you mean to me;
I feel you even though we are apart.

I know I can be a jerk
but my focus now is work.
A relationship is what I want too.
And when I am ready,
to go steady,
the person I want is you.

But as for now,
I like you to somehow,
go on and live the best life that you can.
What I want to see,
is for you to be happy,
till the day you and I meet again.
