The inner conflict between the heart’s hope and the mind’s skepticism is central. In this poem, the speaker reflects on the fading love once professed, questioning whether the love ever existed authentically. Despite uncertainty and feelings of betrayal, they reminisce without resentment, recognizing their genuine affection. The desire for clarity and rekindling the relationship persists, highlighting the struggle between holding onto love and confronting painful truths.

Do You Still Love Me?

You loved me once, or so you said,
and for a while those words remained.
But as the years forged ahead,
the less of them I could retain.

And ever since that night you fled,
when you didn’t bother to explain,
I had succumbed to doubts and dread,
if you would ever love me again.

My mind plays tricks that I’ve been misled,
but my heart continues to maintain,
that even if this love is dead,
that I did not love you in vain.

Memories of you I retread,
tell me not to worry or complain.
You never made promises that were unkept,
and your love for me was never feigned.

“Do you still love me?” I’d ask in my head,
a doubt I hoped to ascertain.
I wish the truth that you can shed,
will bring us back together again.
