Aún Te Amo

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE

The narrative revolves around a heartfelt letter written by someone who loves another person struggling with unresolved trauma from past relationships. Acknowledging the deep emotional turmoil and the necessity for healing, the writer expresses compassion and a painful decision to part ways, encapsulated in the phrase “Aún te amo pero tengo que dejarte ir” (translation: I still love you but I have to let you go). Throughout the letter, reflections on love’s complexities emerge, emphasizing the importance of self-care and timing in relationships. Despite the strong feelings, the writer recognizes that waiting indefinitely is not viable, and thus wishes the other person well while accepting the need for their separation to ensure future happiness.

Aún Te Amo

I’d stay awake at night,
just so I could write,
this heartbreaking letter to you.
After a needed respite,
after the struggles and fights,
I’ve learned to appreciate what we’ve been through.

You taught me so much,
about love and such,
Don’t love too deeply or heavily;
Because love isn’t easy,
a lesson it taught me,
you can’t rush someone who isn’t ready.

Your past love trauma,
brought you a lot of drama,
and scared you from falling in love again.
But know that I am me,
not someone you think I’d be;
I’d hurt myself before causing you pain.

I know how you feel,
your love for me is real
but I can’t wait for you forever.
You need time to heal,
time alone is ideal
before we can really be together.

I wish you only the best,
during your much needed rest;
There’s nothing left for me to do here.
You’ll always be in my heart,
but it’s time for us to part;
Aún te amo pero tengo que dejarte ir.
