A Promise Kept

The snow is falling outside
blanketing the trees far and wide;
It’s nature’s reminder that winter is here.
The cold sensation the air carries
brings back so many memories
of times spent with you in those early years.

Nostalgia tugs at my heartstrings;
Those days of innocence were blessings;
You were my first and forever true love.
You spent so much time with me
in the trunk hole beneath the oak tree;
It was our hideaway from the world above.

It was a place of many first;
It was where you and I rehearsed
our playful exchange of wedding vows.
It was where I took it upon us
to make you a solemn promise
that I’d love you forever as fate would allow.

This young love, your parents didn’t approve;
It was our last winter when your family moved.
I still remember the despair that for days persisted.
Your eyes looked back at me that day
as I watched your family car fade away.
That was when I believed true love really existed.

Now many winters have passed,
You’re now married when I last asked.
I searched for you since the day you left.
You’ll always have a place in my heart,
I hope you’re happy since we’ve been apart.
The love that remains is a promise I’ve unwittingly kept.
