PROLOGUE
This poem explores the painful experience of unrequited love, highlighting the common signs of one-sided affection. Initially perceived as genuine, the relationship soon reveals itself to be unbalanced, marked by ignored messages and lack of effort. The subject faces emotional unavailability from their partner, who seeks fun rather than commitment due to past traumas. The poet recognizes their low priority and the absence of meaningful connection with the partner’s family and friends. Despite numerous red flags, there persists a desire to change the unresponsive partner, ultimately embodying the essence of unrequited love and the hopes that linger in its wake.
Unrequited Love
I thought I found love when I first met you;
I thought what we had was good and true.
But soon the truths came to light;
The connection we had didn’t feel right.
What initially made me excited,
quickly turned out to be just one-sided.
My texts would be ignored or take days for reply.
You never had a straight answer when I wanted to know why.
You showed little effort to spend time together;
You’d keep your options open for something better.
There’d be many excuses why you can’t be with me;
When someone gets too close, you’d be inclined to flee.
You didn’t want relationship ‘cause of past trauma.
When someone managed to get close, it was too much drama.
You were someone who was just looking for fun.
You would never promise anything to anyone.
You are simply selfish with quite a big ego too;
There must always be something in it for you.
I knew I was always low on your priority,
‘cause I couldn’t bring you wealth, fame or glory.
On the back burner you put me on hold
for when you’re out of options or when you get too old.
I never had a chance to meet your family or friends;
They are aware of me but I know nothing of them.
Emotionally unavailable, you’re scared to commit.
So many red flags and I still waver to quit.
Thinking I could change you if I tried hard enough;
But who am I fooling?………
…This is unrequited love.
