PROLOGUE
This poem explores the idea that eyes reveal hidden emotions and thoughts, reflecting the proverb “Eyes are windows to the soul.” The speaker observes someone across the room, noticing how their kind eyes betray secrets and feelings that words cannot express. As the speaker interprets the glances and sparkles in the person’s eyes, it becomes clear that there is a mutual feeling of attraction, despite the spoken words being guarded. The poem emphasizes how non-verbal cues, particularly through one’s eyes, can convey profound truths and desires, making them a powerful means of communication.
The Secret That Your Eyes Betrayed
I saw you standing across the room,
your eyes so kind as they looked my way.
If eyes could speak then you’d be doomed
‘cause all your secrets would be betrayed.
They glistened bright and sparkled that night
in a room with just you and me.
The way they dazzled and shined so bright,
there were things they wanted me to see.
‘Though no words were heard but I could tell
there was something special in that heart.
‘Though you wouldn’t say, your lips hid it well –
the secret your tongue wouldn’t impart.
Your eyes, however, could never lie;
They’re a direct window to your soul.
I’m the secret your heart wants to hide
and this your eyes unwittingly showed.
The way those lashes bat and tease
there’s a message you want to convey.
The way those eyes shyly looked at me
showed that it’s hard for you to say.
But how they shined and sparkled that night
your secret’s ready to be revealed.
It would appear that I’m someone you liked;
Your eyes already told me how you feel.
The things that your lips wouldn’t say
and what you dare not let me know,
those secrets your eyes would betray
‘cause they are windows to your soul.
