The Love Of Cupid

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE

This poem is a retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche from Cupid’s perspective. It explores themes of beauty, love, and challenges. Cupid is tasked by Aphrodite to make Psyche fall for a hideous being but instead falls deeply in love with her at first sight. Despite their love, Psyche’s curiosity leads her to break a promise, causing Cupid to leave her. Yet, her devotion and perseverance through trials bring them back together. Ultimately, divine intervention helps reunite them, teaching Cupid that true love endures through difficulties and is ultimately rewarding.

The Love Of Cupid

Your beauty is renowned and unsurpassed,
a cause for the Goddess of Beauty to resent.
Aphrodite entrusted me with a task
to appease her envy and discontent.

My arrow was to pierce your heart
to make you fall for an unsightly being;
But soon that plan fell apart
I was struck by a beauty never before seen.

By my own arrow, I was woefully stung
and fell in love with you at first sight.
Your beauteous face was lovely and young
it dominated my mind all day and night.

One day my servants found you by our grove
and I didn’t hesitate for us to wed;
And one night, curiosity had you behoved
to look upon my face while I slept in our bed.

That was a promise made that you had broken,
and leaving you forever was my intent;
But I couldn’t do it because of your devotion;
You’d endured many trials in your course to repent.

You’d do anything to be with me again,
like completing tasks assigned by Aphrodite.
I helped when I could, but you still failed in the end
Why’d you open that box, my dear Psyche?

The box’s content sent you to death’s brink,
but mighty Zeus agreed to intervene;
You were given nectar and ambrosia to drink
and I soon reunited with my immortal queen.

Those times apart, a lesson I did learn,
that true love will pass life’s tests and trials.
Our love is strengthened upon your return;
My love and feelings for you are unrivaled.
