October Once More

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE

This poem reflects on a deep sense of nostalgia experienced by an individual reminiscing about a past love that began and ended in October. The narrator recalls their first meeting in a coffee lounge, where a profound connection was established. Over time, this bond evolved but ultimately led to heartbreak a year later, with an abrupt farewell that left unresolved feelings. As another October arrives, the narrator feels the emotional weight of memories, wondering about the well-being of their lost soulmate while grappling with their own feelings of longing and a sense of incompleteness.

October Once More

It is October once more,
Days have gone by too quickly.
Two years ago, heretofore;
I remember it vividly.

We were sitting at the coffee lounge
where you and I met for the first time;
Not once did you look around;
Your eyes fixated only on mine.

There were people sitting nearby
as we shared stories about ourselves;
I can’t forget the look in those eyes;
Not once you looked at anyone else.

There were others with us in that room
but it felt like it was just us there;
As though time froze that afternoon,
with life at a standstill everywhere.

That day the comfort that we did feel
seemed familiar yet felt so rare;
The chemistry between us was real;
It was the first thing we mutually shared.

Fast forward a year thereafter
and it was October once more;
That night marked the end of a chapter,
‘though you never closed that door.

I remember it like yesterday
when you said to me those three words.
That night we severed ties in a way
that not a “Goodbye” was muttered.

But what happened, I’ll never know.
My heart, crushed, as we parted that night;
The heart was happy till you had to go;
You abruptly left by the morning light.

The leaves have started to change colors;
It is now October once more;
Been some time since we’ve seen each other;
I still often wonder how you are….

Are you happy and doing well?
Has life been treating you okay?
I am well as far as I could tell,
but I miss my soulmate who got away.
