I’m Afraid To Contact You

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE

This poem explores the emotional conflict of wanting to reconnect with a former lover after a breakup. The speaker grapples with feelings of guilt for initiating the separation and realization of their past mistakes in not valuing the relationship. Despite a strong desire to reach out, they are held back by their ego and fears of rejection, unsure of how to approach the situation after such a long time apart. The repeated imagery of looking at their phone symbolizes the longing for connection, contrasting with the hesitation to bridge the gap caused by their earlier decisions.

I’m Afraid To Contact You

I really want you to know,
that although we are separated,
it’s still hard for me to let go;
I know that you have waited.

I do want to reach out,
but my ego won’t let me.
There’s so much fear and doubt,
that I’m not someone you’d want to see.

As stupid as it may sound,
and a bit overdramatized,
it’s my fault that you’re not around
and for that I apologize.

I wasn’t ready for us before,
I wasn’t ready then to commit.
I’m not sure what to say anymore,
as it’s been so long since we split.

I would often look at my phone
but not sure what to do.
I would be here all alone,
but I’m afraid to contact you.
