Fool Me Once, Shame On You

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE

This poem explores the theme of love’s ability to blind individuals to harmful relationships. It reflects on the common proverb that warns against repeated deception. The speaker acknowledges their naivety in trusting someone despite knowing their unreliability, illustrating the cycle of heartbreak that accompanies misplaced trust. Each repetition of being fooled highlights a growing awareness of the need for closure and self-protection. Ultimately, the poem conveys a message of breaking free from toxic patterns and the importance of learning from past mistakes to avoid further emotional pain.

Fool Me Once, Shame On You

I was a fool, to be easily fooled
by honey tongue and seductive charms.
You were cruel and I was a tool,
to believe my heart was safe from harm.

I trusted you even though I knew
you weren’t someone I could rely on;
For you there was nothing I wouldn’t do;
You were alluring and had me drawn.

Love’s blinded me even though I know
that one day you would break my heart.
I was naive, just plain gullible;
To keep coming back wasn’t so smart.

Fool me once, shame on you.
At first I wasn’t aware of your game.
I was ignorant, this was then new;
For what you did you should be ashamed.

Fool me twice, shame on me.
For not learning what I should know;
I was so blind then not to see
that you’d hurt me again; It’s your M.O.

Fool me thrice, shame on us.
Should learn by now not to do it again;
Yet I continued to give you my trust,
and for that I deserve my pain.

Fool me no more, it’s game over.
You can stop playing with my mind.
It is time that I seek closure
to move on and leave all this behind.
