PROLOGUE
This poem explores the proverb “Beauty is skin deep” by reflecting on the fleeting nature of physical beauty in contrast to lasting inner qualities such as love and kindness. The speaker admires the dreamlike beauty of someone but emphasizes that true worth lies beyond appearances, as a beautiful face may mask a closed-off heart. The transient nature of looks is highlighted, with a reminder that character and compassion have enduring significance. Ultimately, the poem conveys that genuine beauty emanates from within, and the superficiality of external allure cannot compare to the depth of a good heart.
Evanescence
Your face is like a dream to me
a dream that haunts me everyday.
A face surreal as it can be;
A vision no words can truly convey.
But sadly your heart isn’t open and free;
No one is fooled by your haughty display.
To think you have the world at our knees
is evidence of your naivete.
The future is not for us to foresee;
There’s more than what looks can portray.
Beauty will fade and someday flee,
but what’s in your heart will forever stay.
Love and kindness will always be
something we revere and appreciate.
Unlike superficiality,
a good heart always carries more weight.
Your beauty is profound as most will agree,
but what happens when you’re old and gray?
Your character means much more to me.
Beauty is skin deep as people say.
Time will change what our eyes can see;
Looks are fleeting, prone to decay.
A flower once stood with much envy
will too succumb to its dying days.
The evanescence of physical beauty
is a fact, much to our dismay.
True beauty is what one can’t see
but could be felt miles away.
