Empty Coffee Cups

PROLOGUE

The speaker reflects on the warmth and comfort of daily life shared with a loved one, marked by the ritual of brewing coffee each morning. The aroma of the coffee, described as smoky, nutty, and chocolatey, symbolizes happiness and connection during morning conversations and walks. However, since the loved one’s absence, these memories evoke a sense of loss and longing. The empty coffee cups serve as poignant reminders of the joy once experienced, contrasting sharply with the current emptiness felt in the speaker’s life. Each dawn becomes a bittersweet moment of remembrance, filled with the shadows of past bliss.

Empty Coffee Cups

I used to wake up each day
to the smell of roasted café,
because you used to brew them every morning.
Had coffee over morning talks,
before our usual daily walks…
Life with you then was blissful and rewarding.

The smoky, nutty, chocolatey smell,
that dominates the space we dwell,
each day their aroma would wake me up.
But ever since you were gone,
I’d think of you at every dawn,
while staring at those empty coffee cups.
