Behind the Lens: The Making of ‘You Mean More To Me Than I Let On’ – A Christopher Louie Poetry Music Video Journey

Unveiling the Heartfelt Story of Christopher Louie Poetry’s ‘You Mean More To Me Than I Let On’ Music Video

“You Mean More to Me Than I Let On (Reimagined)” is a reimagined version of a track originally featured on my Volume Two (I Miss You) album, which was released in January earlier this year. When I first produced the original song, I was captivated by the melody and the hook, feeling it stood out as one of the more compelling pieces on the album. After its release, I received a lot of positive feedback, especially from close friends and family who, without me even prompting them, complimented the track. I could tell they were responding to the sound and the catchy melody—after all, the environment at the time was lively and busy, so people weren’t necessarily focusing on the lyrics in the moment. However, the song’s lyrics also had a deeper resonance, as I received more engagement than anticipated, particularly from male listeners, which was a pleasant surprise.

With the decision to reimagine the track, I wanted to give it new life—something that felt more in tune with where I am now, artistically. When I first began promoting this new version, I teased a few visual concepts to offer a glimpse of what the song is about, but in the end, only one of those images actually made it into the music video. I felt it was important for the visuals to align with the message in a fresh way, so I crafted an entirely new visual narrative to complement the song’s themes. One of the main goals of the video was to explore the complexity of love that remains unspoken, and I wanted the imagery to feel grounded in a story that everyone could connect with.

When I first began promoting this new version, I teased a few visual concepts to offer a glimpse of what the song is about, but in the end, only one of those images actually made it into the music video.

The video centers around a male character who is emotionally distant, despite deeply caring for his love interest. He’s shown focusing on mundane, day-to-day tasks—whether it’s stirring his coffee, scrolling through his phone, or reading the newspaper—while the woman in his life is trying to connect with him. His disinterest and lack of attention to her are subtle but clear. The female character, in contrast, is visibly disappointed by his behavior. At times, she seems upset, even frustrated, with the lack of engagement, and it leads to small moments of tension. In one particular scene, she throws a spoon at him in frustration after he shows more interest in his coffee than in her words. These moments were meant to capture how a lack of expression, even when love is deeply felt, can leave one person feeling unimportant or overlooked.

The female character’s emotional arc is essential in showing the contrast between what’s unspoken and what should be said. While the male character fails to show his feelings outwardly, we see that the love is still there, hidden beneath his actions—or lack thereof. It was important for me to convey that while some forms of love are quiet, they are no less meaningful. Love may not always be shown in grand gestures or spoken words, but that doesn’t make it any less significant. The video explores this tension: the disconnect between the woman’s need for validation and the man’s struggle to express his emotions.

I must admit, this video took me much longer to complete than previous projects. The length of the song itself posed a challenge—at almost six minutes and thirty seconds long, it’s much longer than most of the tracks I’ve worked with before, but it fits perfectly with the length of most of the other tracks on the album. There was a lot more to convey in this video because it’s not just a love story; it’s about emotional restraint, internal conflict, and unspoken feelings. The male character’s internal struggle to open up emotionally is something many people, particularly men, can relate to. It’s a stereotype that men are not in touch with their feelings or that they have difficulty expressing themselves. While this is obviously not universally true, it’s a common narrative that I wanted to explore and deconstruct.

The poem—and by extension, the song—gives voice to the words the male character cannot bring himself to speak. He’s aware of the emotional distance his actions create, and his journal becomes a reflection of his inner turmoil. Within its pages, he writes about her, about the love he feels but struggles to express. A pivotal moment in the video shows him opening this journal, revealing pages filled with the song’s lyrics. This was a deliberate choice, as my poems are often written in the form of letters. With the lyrics to the song intentionally displayed on the pages of the journal, this further reinforces the idea that these words are meant for one person and are too intimate to be spoken aloud. His journal is a safe space for him to express the love he cannot articulate directly. Through writing, he is able to communicate his feelings in a way that feels less vulnerable, yet just as meaningful.

Throughout the video, the male protagonist is almost always seen with his journal—either writing in it or holding it close. This journal becomes his means of emotional expression, his way of ensuring that the words will one day reach her, even if he struggles to say them out loud. It’s a way of preserving the truth of his feelings, even in their silence.

Creating this video required a great deal of attention to detail, not just in terms of the visuals but also the underlying emotional tone. I wanted the audience to feel the tension between the two characters—the silent struggle of someone who deeply cares but can’t find the words to express it. The video concludes with a quiet sense of resolution, suggesting that, in the end, the male character made the right choice by sharing his journal with his love interest. As she reads it, she’s moved by the depth of his feelings—so much so that she can’t find the words to express her own emotions. Instead, she simply holds the journal close to her chest, embracing the beauty of his unspoken love in a way that feels both sacred and intimate.
