Attraction

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE

This poem explores the complexity of attraction and the inexplicable emotions it evokes. It describes the physical and emotional responses one experiences when drawn to someone, such as blushing, increased heart rate, and a tendency to mirror behavior. The speaker conveys a deep fascination and comfort in the presence of the other person, appreciating both their extraordinary and ordinary traits. There’s a longing for a stronger connection, with a recognition that attributing this attraction solely to beauty feels simplistic. Ultimately, the poem captures the nuanced and often mysterious nature of human attraction and emotional vulnerability.

Attraction

I can’t explain why I feel such intense attractions.
What is it about you that brings on these reactions?
My pupils dilate, my face blushes too,
and my skin tingles when I see you.

You are someone I can’t stop looking at;
There’s always a pull to give you eye contact.
My heart palpitates, my blood runs hot,
and I naturally smile around you a lot.

I’m also  inclined to mirror your actions;
And would strangely feel nervous in our interactions.
I tend to remember all the small details,
about everything that our time together entails.

Being around you feels very comfortable.
You are someone I can be very vulnerable.
I always have an interest in everything you do;
I’d still be fascinated by the “ordinary” things about you.

You are someone I want to show my affection.
With you my heart yearns for a more solid connection.
What is it about you that makes me feel this way?
To say it’s ‘cause you’re beautiful is a little cliché.
