A Love Proposition 2: Beauty’s Response

by Christopher Louie

PROLOGUE:

This poem serves as a sequel to “A Love Proposition”, centering around a reply to a prior love letter from an admirer. The speaker expresses delight upon receiving the letter but reveals their hesitance towards love and marriage, citing past heartbreak as a significant reason for their reluctance. While acknowledging the admirer’s sincerity and modesty, the speaker confesses to feeling unprepared to open their heart again due to previous emotional scars. They request reassurance that their heart will be protected before they can fully embrace the prospect of new love, indicating a desire to heal further before committing.

A Love Proposition 2: Beauty’s Response

My heart couldn’t contain its excitement
when your letter arrived in my hands.
So sweet was your enticement
and so moving were your intents.

My face was overwhelmed with joy
as each word graced my sight.
You are modest without being coy
and earnest with what you write.

‘Tis true that I have many suitors
but none does compare to you.
I implore you do not trust those rumors
because love is what I want too.

But what I lack is courage
My heart isn’t ready to surrender.
I’m still on a healing voyage
from a love that wasn’t so tender.

I once loved freely with much fervor
I fell fast and gave it my all
but I had been broken by a seducer
and the lies and flatteries that enthralled.

Now I approach love with much qualm
and will love again under one condition;
Assure that my heart won’t be harmed
and I shall consider your love proposition.
